Zamfara governor’s spokesperson congratulates Dauda Lawal on his 61st birthday

Dauda Lawal, governor of Nigeria’s Zamfara State, turned 61 on September 2. Premium Times Nigeria published as a press release a congratulatory text by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, who positively assessed Lawal’s administration.

Idris wrote that he had previously known Lawal as a banker who sought a quiet private life. According to the spokesperson, in 2021 Lawal responded to calls from Zamfara residents to enter politics, despite campaigns that the author of the text described as defamatory.

Revenue claims

The spokesperson stated that the governance of the state changed after Lawal began his gubernatorial term on May 29, 2023. He claims that the administration applies a comprehensive approach to work in the security, education, healthcare and economic sectors.

According to Idris, Zamfara’s monthly internally generated revenue rose from 90 million naira to more than 5 billion naira. He linked this result to an approach to governance that he compared with the theory of structural functionalism, which views society as a system of interconnected institutions.

Cooperation with donors

Idris also stated that Lawal’s administration approached foreign donors, including the World Bank, to attract resources for projects in Zamfara. According to him, the donors agreed to resume support and project funding in the state.

In the address, the spokesperson described the government’s task as rescuing and rebuilding Zamfara and stated that he no longer sees Lawal merely as a leader, but calls him a father.
