Republican Seeks to Create an Alternative to the Strait of Hormuz Using Nuclear Explosions
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich has sparked a wave of discussion on social media with his radical proposal to resolve the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
The politician advocated for the idea of creating an alternative sea channel through a series of nuclear explosions to permanently eliminate dependence on Iran’s actions.
In a post on X, Gingrich proposed a radical engineering approach to reshaping the world’s geography.
“Instead of fighting forever over a 21-mile-wide chokepoint, we will build a new canal through friendly territory,” the Republican wrote, adding that thermonuclear explosions would create a route superior to the Panama and Suez Canals.
According to the plan outlined by the politician, the use of “a dozen thermonuclear explosions” would allow for the rapid creation of a deep-water corridor, completely protected from enemy attacks.
This statement came amid a full-scale U.S. war against Iran and a complete blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which paralyzed global oil supplies.
However, it soon became clear that Newt Gingrich had fallen victim to his own carelessness, as he had cited a piece of writing that was obviously satirical.
The text of the original article, which the politician was commenting on, explicitly stated that the proposed ideas were humorous and should not be taken as a real plan of action.
Social media users and political opponents immediately reacted to the Republican’s mistake, pointing out the absurdity of the situation.
Many noted that Gingrich likely simply did not read the article to the end or mistook the satire for a serious plan to overcome the global fuel crisis.
As a reminder, about a thousand ships are stranded near the Strait of Hormuz following the start of U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran.
Additionally, about 20,000 sailors are stranded due to the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz.
