Russia has unveiled a submarine design featuring vertical launch systems
The United Shipbuilding Corporation of the Russian Federation (OSK) presented the design of a non-nuclear submarine “Amur 1650,” equipped with vertical launch systems and an air-independent propulsion system.
According to published specifications, the submarine is capable of operating for up to 60 days both in the open ocean and in shallow waters, particularly in areas with advanced anti-submarine defenses.
The submarine’s displacement is approximately 3,000 tons, and its crew consists of 42 personnel.
According to the developers, the Amur 1650 has one of the largest weapon loads among non-nuclear submarines—up to 28 weapons.
The submarine can be equipped with Club-S cruise missiles and Russian-Indian BrahMos supersonic missiles.
The design also provides for the integration of equipment tailored to a specific customer, allowing the submarine to be adapted to various requirements.
The Russian side claims that the submarine has enhanced stealth capabilities, which are ensured by:
- reduced noise levels;
- a hull design with optimized contours;
- an acoustic protection system.
At the same time, according to the developers, the hydroacoustic system provides “long-range target detection.”
Russia had previously attempted to promote the “Amur 1650” concept on the international arms market, but no contracts were signed, and construction of actual hulls never began.
In early 2025, it was reported that Morocco was considering the Russian proposal among options for purchasing its first submarines, but no deal was reached.
It is also noted that earlier versions of the project called for a smaller arsenal—approximately 16 weapons—while the new version is said to carry up to 28.
