Rheinmetall is launching mass production of the FV-014 kamikaze drones

Germany is moving to mass production of new loitering munitions—the FV-014 kamikaze drones. The country’s largest defense contractor, Rheinmetall, is launching mass production of these unmanned aerial vehicles, which have a range of up to 100 kilometers. The new drones are positioned as a means of precision strikes against ground targets and are part of the expansion of modern weapons systems production in Europe.

This was announced by the group’s CEO, Armin Papperger, during the company’s online general meeting, according to Focus.

"We are now moving to serial production of this system (the FV-014 loitering munition – ed.) at the site in Neuss," said Papperger.

According to the head of Rheinmetall, the FV-014 kamikaze drone was developed in record time—in just a few months. According to its specifications, the drone has a range of up to 100 km. It can remain airborne for up to 70 minutes and carries a 4-kg warhead.

The drone itself is assembled in Germany, and the warhead in Italy. Rheinmetall is converting its former auto parts factory in Neuss for its production.

The loitering munition is designed for single-use: the device is launched from a container, takes off, and searches for a target. If the target is not found within the allotted time, the drone performs a controlled descent.

It is noted that the Bundeswehr has already ordered such drones worth €300 million, and the framework agreement provides for the possibility of further orders. The first deliveries are expected next year.

Rheinmetall to launch cruise missile production in Europe.

German defense giant Rheinmetall, in partnership with global shipping leader MSC, intends to acquire the Mangalia shipyard in Romania.

In addition, the German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall, together with the telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom, is launching a joint project to develop systems to protect against potential drone attacks and cyber threats.
