Water levels in the Rhine have fallen to new lows due to the prolonged heat wave – Reuters

In Germany, water levels in the Rhine River have dropped to critical levels due to hot weather and a lack of rainfall. As a result of the low water levels, cargo ship owners are being forced to suspend operations on the southern sections of the river.

According to the country’s Inland Waterways Agency (WSV), the depth of the navigable section of the river at its narrowest point in Kaub, near Koblenz, was 15 cm. This is lower than the previous record low of 25 cm, recorded in 2018. Due to the shallow water, cargo ships can only operate at 20% of their loading capacity, which significantly increases logistics costs for cargo owners.

This was reported by Reuters.

Romania will continue to operate the second power unit at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant for at least another nine days. The decision was made after the water level in the Danube near the plant rose by 4 cm.

Romanian authorities have warned of a potential forced shutdown of Unit 2 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant due to falling water levels in the Danube River, according to Christian Bușoi, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.
