Russia transfers Metro business to temporary management — The Local Germany

The authorities of the aggressor state, Russia, have transferred the Russian business of German wholesale retailer Metro to state-appointed temporary management. The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and management of Metro Cash & Carry operations was handed over to UK Torg RUS.

As The Local Germany reports, Metro formally remains the owner of its Russian subsidiary, but no longer has operational control over the business and is assessing the consequences of the decision.

Sales on the Russian market

In the 2024–2025 financial year, Metro's sales in Russia amounted to €2.6 billion. According to the publication, this market remained important for the group.

The decision regarding Metro was another case of transferring assets of foreign companies from countries supporting Ukraine to state management. Earlier in September, Russian authorities took similar measures against the Russian assets of Switzerland's Nestlé and French retailer Auchan.

Restrictions for foreign businesses

After Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has increasingly restricted Western companies' ability to leave the country and, in some cases, taken control of their assets. Some international companies left Russia after the war began, while others maintained a limited presence due to concerns about employees and customers.

The new actions by Russian authorities may increase uncertainty for foreign companies that continue to operate on the Russian market.
