Russia Plans Provocations Against NATO in the Near Future — The Guardian
The Russian Federation may be preparing military and hybrid provocations on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance to test the unity of the West.
The Kremlin seeks to test the allies’ resolve amid growing pressure due to Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian territory.
Currently, European countries and intelligence communities are actively preparing for possible scenarios of escalation by Moscow.
According to intelligence sources, Moscow is planning actions that will not escalate into a full-scale attack but will pose a serious challenge to the allies.
In particular, Latvian intelligence has already detected signs of preparations for such actions against the Baltic states or Poland. The Kremlin’s main goal is to sow discord within NATO and create a climate of panic among the civilian populations of European countries.
A high-ranking political source in another NATO country confirmed that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may attempt to test the U.S.’s readiness to defend the bloc’s smallest members—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Such aggressive intentions on the part of the Kremlin are becoming increasingly evident against the backdrop of the serious difficulties the Russian military continues to face during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also officially confirmed the allies’ concerns following the Eastern Flank Summit in Gdańsk.
The Polish leader stressed that neighboring countries must act in solidarity and with determination in the face of potential danger.
European governments have already begun developing joint mechanisms to respond to non-standard military threats.
“We also unanimously share the view that the situation is very unstable, and various forms of escalation can be expected in the coming weeks and months. We want to prepare ourselves as a group of countries that are directly exposed to this risk,” Tusk said.
