Russia secretly sent a ship carrying cargo to a military base in Syria — WSJ

Russia has dispatched a cargo ship to resupply the strategic Khmeimim airbase in Syria, which may indicate the Kremlin’s intention to maintain its military presence in the country following the change in government.

According to the publication, the cargo ship Sparta departed from St. Petersburg in March and arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus in May. For most of the route, it was escorted by Russian Navy vessels.

As noted, the ship delivered cargo to replenish supplies at the Hmeimim airbase. This is the first recorded mission to supply Russian military facilities in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024.

In mid-May, OSINT analysts also recorded the arrival of the Sparta at the port of Tartus, escorted by military ships. According to their data, the convoy took additional camouflage measures while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

After passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, the ships turned off their transponders, and at least two vessels transmitted false data about their location, indicating they were in the Baltic Sea.
