Russian state media have been ordered to portray Pashinyan's victory as a defeat
The Russian Federation’s administration has reportedly instructed loyal and state-controlled media to portray the results of the parliamentary elections in Armenia as a “defeat” for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, despite the fact that his party, “Civic Contract,” received 49.81% of the vote. This was reported by Meduza, citing an employee of one of the pro-Kremlin media outlets.
According to him, editors were advised to emphasize that the party did not surpass the 50% threshold, as well as to give greater coverage to allegations of alleged violations in order to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election.
As evidenced by Russian media reports, these instructions were followed: a number of TV channels and news agencies emphasized the result of less than 50% and circulated claims of “violations” and a “tense atmosphere” during the voting.
Pashinyan declared a crushing defeat of his opponents after winning the election.
