An oil spill has brought the Port of Antwerp to a standstill
Shipping operations have been suspended at the Belgian port of Antwerp due to an oil spill that entered the Scheldt River from one of the docks. The incident has disrupted port operations and affected vessel traffic.
This was reported by the Belga news agency.
The spill is believed to have occurred on Thursday during the bunkering of the container ship MSC Denmark VI near the Doirgank dock. Due to the scale of the spill, local authorities dispatched an aircraft to assess the extent of the damage.
According to the latest information, the leak has been contained. However, a large amount of oil entered the river and the dock itself. As a result, shipping has been suspended, and currently no vessels can enter or leave the port.
Port authorities reported that they are working to minimize both the operational and environmental damage caused by the incident.
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is the second-largest port in Europe, handling approximately 290 million tons of cargo annually and connecting to more than 800 destinations worldwide.
