Romania has acquired Moldova's only seaport with access to the Black Sea

Romania has completed the acquisition of ICS Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulești Port, which is Moldova’s only port with access to the Black Sea and international waterways.

This was reported by News.ro.

The deal was finalized on April 21 following a year-long process to find a new investor, organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Romanian Transport Minister Ciprian Șerban stated that the acquisition is of strategic importance for the country, as it opens up additional transport routes and strengthens the role of the Port of Constanța.

“In addition, this port is ideally located to be utilized during the future reconstruction of Ukraine,” he noted.

The port of Giurgiulești is Moldova’s only seaport with the technical capacity to accommodate seagoing vessels. Its establishment became possible following agreements in the 1990s, when Ukraine transferred a section of the Danube coastline to Moldova in exchange for a transit corridor through its territory between the northern and southern regions of the Odesa Oblast.

The port is located in the border zone between Moldova, Ukraine, and Romania and is of great importance for regional logistics.

As a reminder, the German Navy is exploring the possibility of establishing another military port on the North Sea coast amid growing military needs.
