Romania spent €1.5 million to shoot down three Russian drones
In three days, Romania spent about 1.5 million euros to shoot down three Russian drones that violated the country’s airspace.
The bulk of the costs came from AIM-9X missiles fired by F-16 fighter jets.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, each missile costs about $400,000, and the total cost also includes the fighter jets’ flight hours and maintenance. The ministry is already looking for cheaper ways to combat drones, but new systems are not expected to be available until next year.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, more than 100 attacks have been recorded near the Romanian border. In 33 cases, Russian drones violated the country’s airspace, and drone debris was found on its territory approximately 50 times.

As a reminder, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation, the aggressor state, over repeated violations of the country’s airspace by drones. This occurred after Romanian fighter jets shot down a drone that had violated Romania’s airspace—the third such incident in the last three days.
Moldova condemned Russia’s violation of Romania’s airspace.
