Rescue workers are operating under extremely difficult conditions, as strong winds, dry weather, and high temperatures are making it difficult to bring the fires under control.
French officials do not rule out the possibility that the fires may not be fully extinguished in the near future. According to pessimistic forecasts, the firefighting efforts could continue until fall. In addition to Gironde, smaller fires are also being fought in several other regions of France—specifically in the departments of Landes, Var, Hautes-Alpes, and Haute-Corse.
The situation remains difficult in neighboring Spain as well. There, firefighters continue to battle large wildfires near Madrid. At the same time, regional authorities reported that they managed to partially slow the spread of the fires on the night of July 27.
French authorities attribute the scale of the fires to a combination of intense heat, drought, and challenging weather conditions. Due to climate change, such natural disasters in Europe have become more frequent and more severe in recent years, according to BFMTV.
