More than 130 people were injured in a fire in the Barcelona metro, and dozens were hospitalized
A fire broke out in the Barcelona Metro on July 28, injuring 136 people. The incident occurred on the city’s Metro Line 1 (L1), according to the Catalan publication Ara.
According to emergency services, 129 people sustained minor injuries, while seven others are in moderate condition. Thirty-nine victims were taken to hospitals, and many people suffered from smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out on the evening of July 27. Due to heavy smoke, passengers had to be evacuated from the Clot and Glòries stations. At the Clot station, which also houses the Rodalies commuter rail station, rescue workers evacuated people from one of the trains.
Passengers reported that the smoke in the tunnels was so thick that people had to use flashlights to find their way and exit the station.
According to preliminary reports, the fire may have started after a piece of the tunnel lining fell off and subsequently caught fire.
Due to the incident in Barcelona, train schedules on Metro lines L1 and L2, as well as several bus routes, were temporarily adjusted. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
