Romania is sinking barges on the Danube to keep the nuclear power plant running
On August 6, Romania continued the operation to sink loaded barges in the Danube riverbed. The goal is to raise the water level near the nuclear power plant in Cernavodă and ensure its stable operation.
According to experts, the operation to sink the barges will take about six hours.
Ana Maria Agiu, a spokesperson for Romania’s National Water Resources Administration (ANAR), said that the work is scheduled to be completed by evening.
“Every additional centimeter we manage to gain is beneficial for the power plant’s operation,” Agiu added.
She clarified that the flooding will be carried out through controlled water filling, after which an assessment of the consequences will be conducted.
The ANAR spokesperson also noted that water levels in Cernavodă are expected to rise following the flooding.
“The first barge will likely be flooded at 3:00 p.m.,” Agiu added.
Following the initial engineering interventions—blasting the rock to alter the riverbed—the water level was raised by 2 cm.
Defense Minister Radu Miruce previously stated that every day the nuclear power plant remains operational is “three times more profitable financially” than these costs.
One power unit at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant has already been shut down, reducing Romania’s electricity generation capacity by 10%. A second power unit is now at risk of being shut down.
