Ghana court keeps 44 accused of police officer’s murder in custody — MyJoyOnline
A magistrate’s court in Buipe, in the Central Gonja District of Ghana’s Savannah Region, has remanded 44 defendants in the case of the murder of Constable Kofi Redimer Owusu into police custody. According to MyJoyOnline, the next hearing in the case is scheduled for October 12, 2026.
Conspiracy and murder charges
All the defendants have been charged with conspiracy and murder. The court, presided over by Livingstone Yaw Lartey Ameyawor, rejected their pleas of innocence and ordered that the accused remain in police custody.
Among the 44 defendants are 10 women aged between 13 and 25 and 34 men. They are accused of involvement in Owusu’s death during a mob attack in Gindabour. According to the outlet, the police officer was allegedly killed by community residents during an attack in response to the death of teacher Abu Seidu, a native of Gindabour.

Circumstances of the teacher’s death
Initial accounts by police and eyewitnesses agree that Seidu encountered patrol officers on a section of the Sawla–Wa road near Gindabour, after which he rode away on a motorcycle. The officers pursued him in a vehicle and allegedly later found the man unconscious on the ground.
Seidu was placed in a police vehicle, but died shortly afterward. The exact cause of his death has not yet been established. News of the teacher’s death caused tension in the community, after which a mob attacked police officers: Owusu was killed and others were injured.
