China became Rwanda’s main export market — France 24

China became Rwanda’s main export destination in the first quarter of 2026. The Chinese market accounted for 26% of Rwanda’s total exports, compared with less than 5% a year earlier.

Growth in exports to China

As France 24 reports, the sharp change is linked to China’s removal of tariffs on nearly all goods from Rwanda. After that, China became the leading export market for the African country.

The report refers to the Chinese market of approximately 1.4 billion consumers. At the same time, the removal of tariffs does not mean automatic access to it for all Rwandan goods.

Sanitary standards

According to the TV channel, access to the Chinese market depends more on compliance with sanitary standards than on tariffs. Therefore, meeting these requirements remains an important condition for Rwandan exporters seeking to sell products in China.
