Ryanair may increase bonuses for employees who identify passengers' oversized luggage
Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair may once again increase bonuses for employees who identify passengers with oversized luggage.
This was announced by the airline’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, according to The Times.
Back in November 2025, the company increased payments to employees for identifying carry-on baggage violations from 1.5 to 2.5 euros. However, according to the Ryanair CEO, even this incentive proved insufficient.
Michael O’Leary noted that after the bonus system was publicized, the number of passengers with oversized bags decreased significantly.
“The number of oversized bags is dropping—I don’t know, from 0.0001% to 0.00001%. As these figures decrease, I think we’ll raise the fee from €2.50 to €3.50 or thereabouts. Everyone should know: don’t show up with a bag that doesn’t fit in the measuring device, because you’ll be charged (€75 – ed.),” said the Ryanair CEO.
The company emphasizes that passengers must strictly adhere to the established rules for carrying carry-on luggage, otherwise they will have to pay significant fines.
In addition, O’Leary once again supported the idea of restricting alcohol sales at airports, especially before morning flights. According to him, such a ban will help reduce the number of incidents on board aircraft and improve flight safety.
As a reminder, Ryanair will require passengers to check in and drop off their luggage at the airport at least one hour before departure, instead of the current 40 minutes.
Irish airline Ryanair has threatened to reroute passengers from Malta to other destinations. The reason is delays at border control at the local airport following the launch of a new EU entry system.
