Saudi Arabia urged the UN Security Council to take a firm stance on Houthi attacks
Saudi Arabia, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, United States, called on the body to take a clear and firm stance on attacks that Riyadh attributes to Yemen’s Houthis. Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, said that these attacks threaten regional security, international shipping and trade in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Statement by Saudi Arabia’s representative
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, Al-Wasil spoke at the meeting convened to discuss attacks against Saudi Arabia. According to data presented by the Saudi side, 73 civilians, including women and children, were injured as a result of strikes on civilian and economic facilities in the cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jizan and Najran.
The Saudi diplomat stressed that the attacks pose a threat not only to the security of the kingdom, its citizens and property, but also to international maritime transport. He called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

Call to end support for the Houthis
Al-Wasil also stated the need for the full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and for an end to all forms of support which, he said, enable the Houthis to continue hostile actions and attacks. He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to self-defense and to protect its security, sovereignty, citizens, residents and national assets in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
The kingdom’s representative also reaffirmed Riyadh’s position on preserving Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. According to him, Saudi Arabia continues to support a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement of the Yemeni crisis, led by Yemenis themselves.
