The Lithuanian Seimas has approved the country's participation in operations in the Strait of Hormuz

The Lithuanian Seimas has approved a decision on the participation of Lithuanian military and civilian experts in international operations to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Eighty-seven lawmakers voted in favor of the proposal, which had previously been approved by the Lithuanian National Defense Council. Two lawmakers voted against it, and 15 abstained.

Currently, it is anticipated that up to five Lithuanian military personnel and representatives of the national defense system may be deployed to the international mission. Once the adopted amendments take effect, the maximum size of the Lithuanian contingent may increase to 40 personnel.

Lithuania plans to join both the multinational naval mission led by France and the United Kingdom and a separate operation led by the United States.

Colonel Dainius Pašvenskas, a representative of the General Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, stated that negotiations with France and the United Kingdom are currently further along than those with the United States.

According to him, the parties are continuing to coordinate their needs and the format of participation, as the U.S. side has not yet provided a final plan for the future mission.
