The Polish Sejm failed to override the president's veto on a sweeping judicial reform — RMF24

On Friday, March 27, the Polish Sejm failed to secure enough votes to override the veto imposed by Polish President Karol Nawrocki on controversial amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure.

This was reported by RMF24.

Despite the ruling coalition’s extensive work on the bill, the final decision fell short by just 20 votes, effectively halting the most sweeping reform of the justice system in the last three decades.

The Polish president vetoed the bill on March 13, citing concerns for public safety as the reason for his decision.

The President’s press service explained that the proposed changes allegedly contradict state obligations, and the document itself lacks legal clarity and systemic coherence.

According to Navrotsky, the new regulations could pose risks to the effective administration of justice and the protection of society.

The blocked bill was intended to significantly liberalize the system of preventive measures in Poland.

In particular, the amendments provided for a relaxation of the conditions for pretrial detention, linking this measure to the maximum penalties for the charges brought.

The reform also established a clear limit: the period of detention prior to a verdict by the court of first instance could not exceed 12 months.

As a reminder, Poland extradited to Ukraine a member of a gang that produced methamphetamine in Kryvyi Rih.

Poland has also joined negotiations regarding the French nuclear umbrella.
