Darlene Graham was sworn in last week, replacing her brother, who died just over a week ago. She will serve as senator until the end of Lindsey Graham’s term. Meanwhile, South Carolina is set to hold a primary to select the Republican Party candidate who will replace Graham on the ballot.
U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Darlene Graham’s interim appointment. In an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, she confirmed her decision to run: “I’ve made my decision. I’m in the race.” The full interview was scheduled to air Tuesday evening.
The filing period for the special election in South Carolina begins on July 21 and will last one week. Members of the House of Representatives Russell Frye and Ralph Norman have already announced their intention to run.
Lindsey Graham died suddenly on the evening of July 11 at the age of 71. His office reported that preliminary autopsy findings indicate damage to the aorta as the cause of death.
