The French Parliament has approved a ban on social media for children under 15
On July 21, both chambers of the French Parliament voted in favor of a bill that prohibits children under the age of 15 from using social media. The bill also includes a ban on the use of cell phones in middle schools.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he aims to implement the new rules at the start of the school year in September. However, the bill will likely be reviewed for compliance with the French Constitution, which could delay its implementation.
“I made a commitment on this, and now the relevant law has been passed: starting this school year, children under the age of 15 will be prohibited from using social media,” Macron wrote on social media platform X.
According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing European Pravda and Euronews, France is joining more than 20 countries that have taken measures to regulate children’s access to social media. Previously, the European Commission recommended limiting minors under the age of 13 to a certain amount of time on social media and ensuring that their use is supervised by parents.
