What the March 2025 Agreement Between Damascus and the SDF Included
The agreement signed in March 2025 between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and Syria’s then-interim government reaffirmed the unity of the Syrian state. It stipulated that all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria would be merged into the administration of the Syrian government.
Under the deal, border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields in the region were to come under the control of central authorities. The agreement aimed to bring the semi-autonomous northeastern region fully back under Damascus’s authority.
It also included a nationwide ceasefire and cooperation by the SDF in combating fighters loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
The agreement further affirmed that the Kurdish people are an integral part of Syria and are entitled to citizenship and guaranteed constitutional rights.
