Sri Lanka has implemented strict fuel rationing amid the war in Iran
The Sri Lankan government has approved emergency spot purchases of fuel and issued tenders for the supply of more than 90,000 tons of crude oil to address the acute energy crisis.
This was reported by Reuters.
Due to U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, the island nation has faced a critical shortage of supplies. To stabilize the situation, authorities have already introduced fuel rationing and an additional day off for civil servants every Wednesday to conserve energy resources.
In the coming days, the country expects the arrival of 33,000 tons of liquefied gas and is also urgently purchasing 300,000 tons of coal from an Indian company to support the power grid. Priority in fuel distribution will be given to farmers, fishermen, and the tourism sector, which form the backbone of the country’s economy. While Russia watches global markets destabilize due to the conflict in the Middle East, South Asian countries are forced to spend their limited foreign exchange reserves on purchases at inflated spot prices.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Sri Lanka has only just begun to recover from the 2022 financial collapse. New tenders for gasoline and diesel will be announced outside standard procedures to expedite logistics as much as possible. The government is trying to prevent a complete blackout and a halt in transportation, while urging the public to conserve energy as much as possible.
