Steinmeier is being considered as a possible EU representative in the negotiations on Ukraine

In Germany, there is discussion about President Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a potential representative of the European Union in possible negotiations to end the war against Ukraine.

This is reported by Spiegel.

According to the publication, Steinmeier’s candidacy is being discussed within Germany’s governing coalition, and the question of his possible participation in the negotiation process may be brought up for internal consultations in the near future.

In Berlin, according to sources, there is no support for the idea of appointing former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the EU representative in the negotiations—a proposal previously put forward by the Kremlin.

At the same time, among the options being discussed is a “negotiating duo” format involving Steinmeier and Schröder.

The publication’s sources note that German authorities do not believe Moscow is ready for real compromises and view such signals as part of a hybrid strategy to divide Europe.

One of the possible tests of the seriousness of Russia’s intentions in Berlin is Moscow’s willingness to extend the ceasefire.

One of the European Union’s demands in the event of potential negotiations with Russia should be the withdrawal of Russian military forces from Transnistria.
