Nigeria’s Abia State seeks possible UNESCO recognition for heritage sites
The authorities of Abia State in Nigeria have granted several cultural and natural sites state monument status to strengthen their preservation and promote their possible recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The decision was approved by the State Executive Council in Umuahia, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
State Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu told journalists about the decision. According to him, the new status is intended to strengthen the preservation and promotion of the selected sites, as well as increase their tourist appeal.
Sites granted monument status
The list of state monuments includes the National War Museum, Ojukwu Bunker and Government College, located in Umuahia. Ibom Waterfall in Arochukwu and Ulochukwu Caves in Alai-Bende were recognized as state natural monuments.
Kanu said that upgrading the status of these locations should enhance their tourism potential and contribute to possible UNESCO recognition. He also announced that the city of Aba had been granted the status of a “creative and innovative city” as part of the authorities’ efforts to develop the state’s cultural, creative and tourism potential.

Work at the sites
According to the official, renovation work at Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum has reached approximately 80% completion. It is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. Kanu noted that this should improve the preservation and historical value of the sites, as well as conditions for visitors.
The state Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy has also begun developing a tourism corridor to Ibom Waterfall in Arochukwu. In particular, initial work to level access roads has already begun; the project is also expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
In addition, the state has begun installing monuments at various locations to preserve historical heritage and honour heroes and heroines. One of them will be dedicated to participants in the 1929 Aba Women’s Riot.
