Swedish fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea
The Swedish Air Force activated its Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) system to intercept two Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers flying over the Baltic Sea.
The Swedish Air Force Command officially reported this on social media platform X, noting that the operation was conducted in close coordination with Alliance partners.
The incident occurred on Monday when Swedish air defense assets detected the Russian aircraft group at 10:00 a.m. local time.
In addition to two heavy bombers, the group included two escort fighters.
“The bombers were escorted by two Russian fighter jets, and the interception was coordinated with NATO allies,” the Swedish military emphasized.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Robert Krznaric, head of the Swedish Air Force’s operations department, the enemy aircraft were detected northeast of the strategically important island of Gotland.
Swedish fighter jets escorted the Russian group along the entire length of the island, demonstrating their readiness to respond immediately in the event of a border violation.
The Russian aircraft’s route passed through the Gulf of Finland, after which the planes flew through the air corridor between Sweden and the Baltic states.
The Tu-22M3 bombers continued their flight south to the Danish island of Bornholm, where they turned around and returned to Russian territory.
The entire time the aircraft were near the borders, their movements were monitored by joint NATO and Swedish forces.
Representatives of the Swedish Armed Forces believe that Moscow’s actions are intended to demonstrate strength and test the response speed of the Scandinavian region’s defense systems.
At the same time, the Air Force noted that no direct violation of Swedish airspace was recorded this time, as the aircraft remained in international airspace.
