Sweden is purchasing French frigates for its navy

Sweden has decided to purchase French frigates to modernize its navy. French President Emmanuel Macron called this an important step for European security and thanked Stockholm for its trust in the French defense industry. He wrote about this on the social media platform X.

Sweden has officially selected the French company Naval Group for a major contract to supply new warships. The deal involves four modern frigates, which are expected to significantly strengthen the Swedish navy in the coming years.

French President Emmanuel Macron immediately welcomed this decision and called it an important signal for all of Europe. “Sweden has chosen the defense frigate and Naval Group to modernize its fleet. I thank Sweden and appreciate the trust placed in France,” Macron wrote on social media platform X.

According to preliminary data, the contract value could be around $4.25 billion. Sweden is set to receive the first ship as early as 2030.

The French proposal won out over competition from the British company Babcock and the Spanish firm Navantia. Ultimately, Stockholm decided to go with French technology. In Paris, this decision is being described not merely as a commercial deal, but as part of a new defense partnership between the two countries.

Macron noted that France recently also selected Saab’s GlobalEye radar surveillance aircraft to modernize its AWACS fleet.

According to him, this demonstrates that France and Sweden are increasingly cooperating in the fields of security and defense. “A strong and sovereign Europe within NATO—that is our vision for common defense and security,” the French president emphasized.

For Sweden, modernizing its navy has become particularly important following the country’s accession to NATO. Against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine, countries in the Baltic region are actively strengthening their armies, navies, and defense systems.

The new frigates are intended for patrolling, protecting sea lanes, air defense, and supporting military operations in the Baltic Sea. Experts note that over the past few years, Europe has sharply increased its defense spending. Northern European and Baltic countries, which view Russia as the main threat to the region, are rearming particularly aggressively.

Against this backdrop, the French defense industry is securing an increasing number of major contracts. Naval Group is already building warships for several countries around the world and is considered one of the largest manufacturers of combat vessels in Europe.

The Swedish contract could become one of the largest naval orders in Europe in recent years for the French company.

At the same time, the deal itself demonstrates once again that European countries are increasingly seeking to procure weapons within the EU to reduce their dependence on external suppliers and accelerate the development of their own defense industries.

In Sweden, the captain of the detained oil tanker Jin Hui, which may be linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” has been arrested. The Chinese citizen is suspected of using forged documents and violating maritime regulations regarding the vessel’s seaworthiness.

Earlier, Swedish police officially arrested the vessel Caffa, which had been held in the country’s territorial waters for two months.
