Starting in June, Sweden will introduce stricter requirements for obtaining citizenship

Starting June 6, 2026, the requirements for foreigners seeking Swedish citizenship will become significantly stricter.

This was reported by the Sweden Herald, citing the government’s plans to strengthen integration processes. The key change will be an increase in the mandatory residency period in the country from the current 5 to 8 years.

In addition to the length of residence, applicants aged 16 and older will be required to pass exams in Swedish and social studies. However, the introduction of the language test itself may be postponed until October 1. A requirement for financial self-sufficiency is also being introduced: the applicant’s annual income must be at least 241,800 Swedish kronor, and receipt of social assistance must not exceed six months over the past three years.

The new rules also provide for a more thorough check of applicants’ integrity and conduct. In particular, a criminal record in Sweden or abroad will result in a significant extension of the waiting period before documents can be submitted. The changes will even apply to those whose applications have already been submitted but have not yet received a final decision.

As a reminder, Sweden has confirmed the Russian origin of the drone that spied on a French aircraft carrier.

Sweden also permits the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory in the event of war.
