Xi Jinping told Trump that Putin might come to regret the war against Ukraine, according to the FT
During talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may come to regret his decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing several sources familiar with the negotiations.
According to the publication, the topic of Ukraine was one of the key issues during the meeting. The parties also discussed Trump’s proposal regarding possible cooperation between the U.S., China, and Russia against the International Criminal Court.
As the FT notes, Xi Jinping’s comments on Russia’s war against Ukraine were harsher and more direct than before.
One of the publication’s sources, who is familiar with previous talks between Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Joe Biden, emphasized that the Chinese leader had previously avoided direct assessments of Vladimir Putin and his decision to invade.
At the same time, the Financial Times notes that the Biden administration has repeatedly accused China of supplying Russia with dual-use goods that could be used to support the war against Ukraine. The Trump administration also expressed similar concerns, though much less frequently.
Additionally, according to sources, during the summit, Trump proposed that the U.S., China, and Russia join forces in opposing the International Criminal Court, stating that the three countries’ interests on this issue align.
