Xi Jinping urges officials to avoid reckless pursuit of GDP growth
At the Central Economic Work Conference held in Beijing on December 10–11, China's President Xi Jinping sharply criticized local officials for implementing “reckless” and superficial projects, promising strict penalties for such violations. This warning is significant because prioritizing rapid growth without quality risks undermining the country’s stable development.

The Chinese leader cited examples of misconduct including the construction of disproportionately large industrial parks, disorderly expansion of local exhibitions and forums, as well as inflated statistics and project timeline falsifications. He emphasized that all plans must be fact-based and aimed at sustainable, genuine growth without exaggeration.
Xi Jinping also stressed that evaluation of officials should not be limited to GDP growth rates but must also consider their success in enhancing public welfare and maintaining social stability. This balanced approach aims to ensure both economic dynamism and long-term stability.
