Syria and US discuss expanding bilateral partnership

In Syria, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a meeting in Damascus with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jake McGhee. The sides discussed expanding bilateral cooperation and partnership between Syria and the United States.

Meeting in Damascus

As Anadolu Agency reports, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said that the participants also reviewed recent regional and international developments. The meeting took place on Monday, September 14. At the same time, the Syrian Foreign Ministry did not specify when McGhee arrived in Damascus or how long his visit would last.

Previous contacts

About a week earlier, al-Shaibani met in Ankara with the US special envoy for Syria and US ambassador to Türkiye, Thomas Barrack. Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, contacts between Damascus and Washington have intensified. Following the fall of the Assad regime, Syria’s government seeks to strengthen international ties, support economic recovery, and attract investment.
