SpaceX has warned of a new risk to data centers

SpaceX has warned investors that water shortages could seriously impact the operation of data centers used for artificial intelligence and computing. The company officially included this factor among its risks ahead of its IPO, listing water alongside electricity and chips.

SpaceX updated its investment documents ahead of a potential IPO and unexpectedly added water shortages to the list of key risks. These shortages affect the water needed to cool large data centers that handle artificial intelligence systems and data processing, effectively acknowledging that the future of digital infrastructure depends not only on technology but also on fundamental resources.

The company explicitly noted that water for data centers is becoming just as critical a resource as electricity or processors, and that water shortages, droughts, or restrictions imposed by local authorities could slow infrastructure development, increase costs, and even force a switch to more expensive cooling systems.

In fact, the point is that large data centers are consuming more and more water, and this is already sparking global debate about the environmental impact of such technologies, especially in regions where droughts are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

The document also explains that water supply issues are now taken into account as early as the site selection stage for new data centers, since without stable access to this resource, such facilities may simply grind to a halt. Separately, SpaceX warned investors about potential dilution of shares following the IPO due to the issuance of new shares, and also reserved a portion of the shares for employees and individuals close to management, which is standard practice for large tech companies prior to going public.

The company did not explain why a clause regarding water appeared in the documents specifically now, but the changes may be related to clarifications from U.S. regulators, who review IPO filings and require more detailed disclosure of potential risks associated with business scaling. TechCrunch reports on this.
