UN special envoy warns of risk of full-scale war in Yemen
UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg called on the parties to the conflict in Yemen to cease hostilities and exercise maximum restraint. He warned that the latest escalation could develop into a full-scale war. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing a UN statement.
Call for restraint
According to Grundberg, recent attacks by the Houthi group on several fronts have intensified hostilities and increased the risk of further expansion of the conflict. He described these developments as extremely alarming, citing reports of civilians killed and injured, families displaced, and damage to civilian infrastructure.
The special envoy stressed that a return to prolonged large-scale hostilities would have grave consequences for civilians and further complicate the path toward a political settlement. He also called on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Fighting on several fronts
In recent days, fighting has resumed in Yemen between government forces and the Houthis, including in the governorates of Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Al-Bayda. At the same time, airstrikes were carried out against the group's facilities. Since July 2026, the parties have carried out a series of mutual attacks that ended the relative calm that had persisted after the UN-mediated truce took effect in April 2022.
Grundberg called for the use of available communication channels, including the UN-supported Military Coordination Committee, to prevent a new escalation. He said he would continue direct contacts with the parties and also appealed to regional and international actors to help de-escalate and return to political negotiations.
