US–Venezuela Cooperation Under Rodríguez Is ‘Sheer Pragmatism’

The current situation in Venezuela can be described as “sheer pragmatism” on the part of both the Chavista leadership and Donald Trump, rather than a formal or balanced political deal, according to international affairs analyst Javier Farje.

He noted that when the US struck Caracas, “the whole structure of the Chavista government was left intact, apart from a couple of buildings.” In that context, Delcy Rodríguez became Washington’s pragmatic choice for interim president, since she controls Venezuela’s oil ministry and holds significant political influence.

Farje added that Rodríguez is also the sister of the President of the National Assembly, which further strengthens her position within the country’s power structure.

At the same time, the US sought to avoid a costly and “messy war.” Both sides understand their limits, he said: Rodríguez recognises that she cannot challenge Trump directly, while Trump is unwilling to launch a full invasion because of the risks involved. As a result, “the pragmatic sides of both have come together.”
