U.S. First Lady Melania Trump did not support a number of initiatives by her husband, Donald Trump, regarding the renovation of the White House and the accommodation of guests.

These details were shared by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan in their book *Regime Change: Inside Donald Trump’s Imperial Presidency*. 

In particular, the U.S. president’s wife objected to the idea of converting the East Wing—where her office is traditionally located—into a large ballroom.

According to the authors, the First Lady, who prefers a quiet atmosphere, objected to billionaire Elon Musk staying overnight at the residence while working at a government department. Despite Melania Trump’s initial objections, the businessman still spent several nights in the Lincoln Bedroom with the head of state’s approval. In addition, the couple had regular disagreements over the president’s desire to add gilding to the Oval Office’s interior and over their differing visions for the design of their private bedrooms.
