The U.S. is sending a special envoy to Greenland amid tensions with Denmark

The United States is preparing for the first visit by its special representative for Greenland. The trip comes amid strained relations with Denmark and discussions about the island’s future.

This move is expected to signal Washington’s growing interest in the region and increased diplomatic activity surrounding Greenland.

This was reported with reference to Bloomberg.

U.S. Special Representative Jeff Landry intends to visit the Arctic island as early as next month. He was appointed to this position by President Donald Trump back in December.

It is noted that Landry, who is also the governor of Louisiana, plans to participate in the “Future of Greenland” business conference, which will take place on May 19–20 in the island’s capital, Nuuk.

It remains unclear whether his trip will include separate meetings with Greenland’s leadership. At the same time, Landry’s role as envoy has drawn heightened attention due to his lack of experience in Arctic policy, as well as his previous statements regarding the island’s potential transfer to U.S. control.

Upon his appointment, Landry stated that it was an honor for him to serve Donald Trump in order to “make Greenland part of the United States.” U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Ken Gauery is also expected to attend the conference.

This visit comes amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Copenhagen after Trump stepped up his rhetoric regarding establishing control over Greenland. The island is of strategic importance in the Arctic and is a semi-autonomous territory within Denmark.

Greenland is restricting foreign investment due to American demand for housing in Nuuk.

The U.S. is interested inGreenland for security reasons, not resources.

It should be noted that discussionsregarding Greenland are ongoing between Denmark and the U.S.

Earlier, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to NATO’s collective defense principle amid aggressive statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
