US Announces Withdrawal from Dozens of UN and International Organisations
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to withdraw the United States from 66 United Nations bodies and other international organisations, a move that would significantly reduce Washington’s participation in global cooperation on climate, peace, democracy and humanitarian issues.
In a presidential memorandum, the administration said the decision followed a review of organisations and agreements deemed contrary to US interests. The move includes ending both participation and financial contributions to the affected institutions.
The list covers a broad range of bodies, including non-UN international organisations as well as multiple UN entities involved in climate policy, democratic governance, maternal and child health, and the protection of civilians during armed conflicts.
The administration has argued that the United States will continue to pursue its foreign policy goals through alternative channels, even as it scales back formal engagement in multilateral forums. The United Nations is expected to respond to the announcement.
The decision follows a broader pattern during Trump’s second term, marked by withdrawals from major international agreements and organisations, some of which had previously been rejoined under the prior US administration.
