U.S. Forecasts Record-Breaking El Niño — Bloomberg
El Niño, which is intensifying in the Pacific Ocean, could become the strongest on record since observations began in 1950.
According to a forecast by the U.S. Climate Prediction Center, there is a 69% probability that the phenomenon will set a historic record for intensity in October–December 2026. The probability of a very strong El Niño this fall and winter exceeds 90%.
The forecast is attributed to the rapid warming of the Pacific Ocean’s surface waters. In July, water temperatures in some areas were approximately 2°C above normal.
El Niño is expected to intensify through the end of the year. Its impact could extend far beyond the Pacific region—in particular, causing above-normal temperatures in parts of the Northern Hemisphere and drier weather in certain regions of Asia, Australia, and the Americas.
