The U.S. has launched a large-scale military operation against Iran

UA NEWS 08 July 2026 07:53
The U.S. has launched a large-scale military operation against Iran

The United States carried out a series of airstrikes against Iran’s military infrastructure. Officials in Washington stated that the operation was in response to Tehran’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and emphasized that hostilities are ongoing.

According to U.S. officials, the operation targeted military facilities linked to attacks on civilian commercial vessels in international waters.

The command stated that the operation was prompted by three Iranian attacks on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. considers these actions a violation of the ceasefire.

“U.S. Central Command forces have launched a series of powerful strikes against Iran to inflict significant damage on its targeted attacks on commercial vessels with crews consisting of civilians in international waterways,” according to a CENTCOM statement.

Even before the operation was officially confirmed, local and international media reported a series of explosions in southern Iran. In particular, they occurred near the port of Sirik. Subsequently, Iranian state media also reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and on the island of Qeshm.

Axios journalist Barak Ravid, citing a U.S. official, reported that strikes were carried out against a number of military targets in the Strait of Hormuz area. According to him, the targets included air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, anti-aircraft missile systems, anti-ship cruise missile positions, drone launch sites, and port infrastructure.

The Axios source also noted that the current U.S. operation was four to five times larger in scale than the strikes U.S. forces carried out in the Strait of Hormuz area ten days ago.

Meanwhile, CNN, citing a U.S. official, reports that the military operation is still ongoing. According to the network’s source, the strikes will continue for some time, and their goal is to punish Iran, not to deliver a proportional response to its actions.

As Axios notes, this new exchange of strikes creates the risk of further escalation between Washington and Tehran. Furthermore, it jeopardizes the memorandum of understanding that the parties signed less than three weeks ago, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States does not need Ukraine’s help in defending against Iranian drone strikes. He emphasized that American drones are “the best in the world” and their capabilities surpass those of any others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that the United States allegedly does not need Ukraine’s help in combating Iranian “Shahed” drones. The head of state called these remarks “rhetoric” and stressed that what matters most are concrete actions and cooperation between countries
