Talks between the U.S. and Iran on Iran’s nuclear program and the security situation in the Middle East have begun in Switzerland. The U.S. side has already announced the first positive results of the meeting.

According to U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance, the talks could last several days and are focused on two key topics—Iran’s nuclear program and the situation in Lebanon.

“We have already made significant progress over the past few hours,” Vance said.

The talks are being mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. The U.S. delegation is led by Jay D. Vance, and the Iranian delegation by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Officials in Washington called the meeting historic, noting that the U.S. and Iranian leaderships had not held talks at such a high level for years.

On June 20, Donald Trump announced the possibility of imposing a fee on merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz following an agreement with Iran.

Earlier, Trump stated that Iran would not receive any money under the new agreement.

Iran has proven to be a tough nut to crack for Washington, according to the director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary Iran.

Trump called the deal with Iran an unconditional surrender.
