The U.S. is opening a new consulate in Greenland

The United States is finalizing preparations to open a new consular office in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The diplomatic mission will move from a small wooden building near the port to modern premises in the city center, occupying the entire first floor of a newly constructed complex.

This was reported by DR.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for May 21 and will be attended by Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry. U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Gower confirmed the event and expressed his anticipation for the visit to the autonomous territory. Speculation regarding the date of the facility’s opening has been ongoing since 2024, when news of the U.S. acquisition of the property first emerged.

The expansion of the diplomatic presence comes amid growing U.S. strategic interest in the Arctic region. The opening of the new facilities is intended to strengthen consular capabilities and promote deeper cooperation between the countries. Invitations to the event have already been sent to officials and members of the public.

Greenland has confirmed that it is negotiating with the U.S. regarding an increase in the American military presence on the island. Against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s statements about his desire to take control of Greenland, the issue of security in the Arctic has once again become a central focus in relations between Washington, Copenhagen, and the island’s local authorities.

Earlier, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the Trump administration’s primary interest in Greenland is related to national security, not the extraction of rare earth or energy resources.

It should be noted that discussionsregarding Greenland are ongoing between Denmark and the United States.

Earlier, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to NATO’s collective defense principle amid aggressive statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
