The US saved the world, Ireland should be grateful — Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ireland should be “very grateful” for U.S. actions, which, in his view, prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump made this statement during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the White House, according to CNN.

Trump emphasized that the world must understand how dangerous Iran would be with nuclear weapons, and that the U.S. “took on this job.” “If we allow countries that are sick and crazy to have nuclear weapons, the whole world should be very grateful,” Trump said, adding that he is “disappointed in NATO” and some other allies who have not joined in supporting U.S. and Israeli operations. “They say what we’re doing is great, but they won’t help. That’s not good for the partnership,” the president added.

At the same time, Ireland has its own position. President Catherine Connolly condemned the war against Iran, calling it a “violation of international law,” and emphasized that “the normalization of war cannot be accepted.” Opposition parties also call the actions of the U.S. and Israel illegal. Prime Minister Martin refrained from such statements but repeatedly called for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The meeting at the White House focused on security, diplomacy, and the risks of nuclear proliferation. Trump called himself a key figure who “prevented a country seeking nuclear weapons from becoming a reality” and urged allies to support the U.S. more. Martin agreed that “it is unacceptable for states with unstable politics to possess nuclear weapons.”

Thus, the U.S. continues to insist on its role as a global deterrent, while Ireland maintains a cautious stance, condemning violence and violations of international law. The meeting revealed differences in views on the war in Iran, even among allies, and underscored the complexity of coordinating actions in modern conflicts.
