US announces increased pressure on Iran — The National
In New York, the administration of US President Donald Trump said it is increasing pressure on Iran amid contacts between delegations of the two countries through intermediaries during the UN General Assembly. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Washington considers Trump’s position in the negotiations advantageous.
As The National reports, Trump said that his son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with an Iranian delegation at the UN. According to the US president, representatives of the two sides communicated for three hours. Witkoff clarified that the contacts took place through intermediaries who conveyed messages between the sides.
Pressure on Tehran
Pigott said that the United States is increasing pressure on Iran through the Treasury Department’s Economic Outcast campaign and actions by the US military to block Iranian oil shipments. He also said that the Trump administration seeks to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

According to him, the US military has largely restored shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Before the start of the war, about 20 million barrels of oil passed through this waterway daily, while current volumes stand at approximately 60–70% of the pre-war level, the State Department spokesperson said.
Situation in the region
The publication writes that the war launched by Trump together with Israel on February 28 has continued for nearly seven months, although the president predicted it would end within a few weeks. Disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the report, contributed to rising food and fuel prices in the United States.
The State Department also warned of the risk of rapid escalation after Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen seized, among other locations, Mocha and Perim Island. Pigott said that the United States maintains constant contacts with Saudi partners and cooperates with allies in the Persian Gulf.
