Finnish court allows appeal over surveillance of Elokapina — YLE News
The Supreme Court of Finland has granted leave to appeal in a case concerning the monitoring of telephone communications of activists from the environmental movement Elokapina during the World Rally Championship in Jyväskylä in the summer of 2024. At this stage, one of the applicants has been granted leave to appeal.
Appealing the decisions of the court of appeal
The individuals whose telephone communications were monitored are asking the Supreme Court to overturn the decisions of the court of appeal. The case examines the conditions under which police may use such monitoring to prevent crimes under the Police Act.
According to YLE News, the police of Inland Finland monitored the telephone communications of four Elokapina members during the World Rally Championship in Jyväskylä.

Basis for the police application
Police applied for permission to monitor telephone communications because they suspected the activists of planning aggravated criminal damage during the competition. Law enforcement justified the suspicion by citing Elokapina protests at the rally over the previous two years.
The Supreme Court said that the issue in the case concerns the legal grounds for monitoring telephone communications for the purpose of preventing crimes.
