A court in Moldova has upheld the sentence against Gagauzia's pro-Russian leader, Gutsul

The Chisinau Court of Appeals upheld the sentence against Gagauzia’s leader, Yevgenia Gutsul, who had previously been sentenced to seven years in prison in the case involving the illegal financing of the “Shor” party.

This was reported by NewsMaker.

On May 28, the court considered appeals in the case of Gutsul and former “Shor” party secretary Svetlana Popan.

The judges upheld the decision of the court of first instance, under which Yevgenia Gutsul was sentenced to seven years in a semi-closed prison, and Svetlana Popan to six years.

The Appeals Chamber rejected the defendants’ lawyers’ appeals and did not change the sentence.

After the hearing, attorney Cristina Gladkov stated that the defense plans to appeal to the Supreme Court of Moldova.

Her colleague Sergiu Moraru called the Appeals Chamber’s decision “illegal.”

Evgenia Gutsul is one of the most pro-Russian politicians in Moldova and is associated with the party of fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.

On March 24, the Moldovan Cabinet of Ministers approved the introduction of a 60-day state of emergency in the energy sector due to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.

Moldova will not ignore the consequences of the Russian attack on Ukraine’s infrastructure, which damaged the Isaccha-Vulcanesti power line. Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi stated that once repairs to the line are complete, the government will send Russia a diplomatic note demanding compensation.
