Nigerian court remands man in alleged kidnapping and armed robbery case

The High Court of Benin in Nigeria ordered the remand of 30-year-old Haruna Ayuba in a case involving alleged kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

14-day remand

Justice Terry Momodu granted an application by police prosecutor Polycap Odion of the Edo State Police Directorate of Legal Services. Ayuba was placed in a correctional facility for an initial period of 14 days pending legal advice from the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions.

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the police application was heard without the participation of the other side.

The prosecution’s version

According to Odion, Ayuba and another person who has not yet been arrested allegedly committed the crimes on July 6 on Igue-Farm Road near Igarra, within the Auchi district. The prosecutor said they allegedly conspired to kidnap Atoruga Simeon and Mary Godwin.

The prosecution also alleges that Ayuba allegedly kidnapped these people and took 15,000 naira in cash and food items worth 40,000 naira while armed with a firearm and other dangerous weapons. According to the prosecutor, the man faces five counts related to kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy.

The court adjourned the case until September 25.
