Taiwan calls Xi Jinping’s statements a distortion of facts — Jerusalem Post

Taiwan’s government called Chinese President Xi Jinping’s statements about the island’s future, made to US President Donald Trump in Washington, a distortion of facts. Taiwanese authorities stressed that only Taiwan’s residents can determine its future through democratic means, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Taiwan’s position

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Xi Jinping’s remarks are consistent with China’s ongoing approach of distorting facts and unilaterally presenting its own position and claims. The ministry noted that Taiwan’s sovereignty belongs to all Taiwanese people and that the Chinese Communist Party has no right to represent the island’s residents.

Xi Jinping’s statement

Xi Jinping told Trump that China’s position on safeguarding national reunification and territorial integrity is clear. He also expressed hope that the United States would, in his words, adhere to the correct position against Taiwan’s independence.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and his administration reject China’s claims to the island’s territory. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry called China the real disruptor of peace and stability in the region, citing its military threats around the island as well as in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The ministry added that Taiwan will continue cooperating with the United States and other partners to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, although they have no formal diplomatic relations. After meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing, Trump said in May that he was suspending a planned new arms sale to Taiwan, calling it a tool for negotiations.
