Tamaki reelected leader of Japan’s Democratic Party for the People for a third term
In Tokyo, Japan, Yuichiro Tamaki was reelected leader of the opposition Democratic Party for the People (DPP) for a third term. In the election held during an extraordinary party convention on September 7, he defeated his only rival, 30-year-old lower house lawmaker Mikihiko Hashimoto.
As The Japan Times reports, Tamaki received 127 out of 159 points, while Hashimoto received 32. Among the party’s lawmakers, the incumbent leader won 42 points and his opponent 11.
Plans through 2029
The new term of office for 57-year-old Tamaki will last until the end of September 2029. After the vote, he called this period a time to prepare the party to gain power. According to him, the DPP seeks to increase its number of seats in parliament and govern in a way that allows the party to lead the implementation of policy decisions.
In the 2028 upper house election, the party plans to win at least 40 seats, including seats not up for reelection. This is expected to allow the DPP to become the largest opposition force in the upper house. The party currently has 25 seats there, while the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan has 39.

Tamaki also said that the DPP wants to strengthen its position in the next lower house election by increasing its bargaining power and ability to implement policy. The party currently has 28 seats in the lower house.
Relations with the government
Tamaki said he does not plan to make significant changes to the DPP leadership team: Secretary-General Kazuya Shimba will retain his post. Regarding the possible appointment of Hashimoto and other junior and mid-ranking party members, he said he would consider personnel decisions by selecting people for appropriate positions.
The DPP leader added that the party would assess the actions of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government on a case-by-case basis. Regarding the government’s plan to reduce the consumption tax rate on food products for two years, Tamaki said the DPP would point out its problems and propose an alternative. He also stressed that the party would not rush to form an alliance with other opposition forces, focusing on strengthening itself.
